Blackburn 1 v Arsenal 2

Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin scored for the second successive Premiership match as a strong Arsenal performance gave them a deserved 2-1 win against Blackburn. Mame Diouf scored for Rovers, but Arsenal played the type of game that they knew would be required at Ewood Park. Th win moves the Gunners to the top of the Premiership for a few hours at least.Worryingly for the Gunners however, Robin van Persie had to be substituted just after the half hour mark with an injured left ankle.

Arsenal’s incessant pressure finally paid off at with a 1-1 draw at Anfield in a game that saw both sides reduced to ten men. Reds’ debutant Joe Cole was given his marching orders on the stroke of half time after clattering into Arsenal debutant Laurent Koscielny. It was then the new Arsenal defender who  harshly saw two yellow cards in quick succession late in the second half that evened things up, but the game will wrongly be remembered for the controversial decisions of referee Martin Atkinson, who did not yellow card David Ngog for an earlier and deliberate handball. Quite how Steven Gerrard remained on the pitch too will remain a mystery.

Goals from Andrey Arshavin, Robin Van Persie, a Chris Baird own goal and a delicious chip from substitute Carlos Vela ensured the Gunners ended on a positive note in a season that promised to deliver so much. True injuries can be said to have impeded the progress of other sides, but with a squad that lacked any real depth of cover when injuries to quality players came thick and fast, there was simply not like for like replacements to come in, and that hurt the Gunners.

Blackburn Rovers 2 v Arsenal 1

It was like a return to the bad old days of trips up north. There was that perception that Arsenal did not fancy away days that took in the robust physical games of teams like Blackburn, and so that was to prove the case at Ewood Park on Sunday. Robin Van Persie’s tenth strike of the season gave the Gunners a deserved lead, but David Dunn and Christopher Samba replied for Rovers who were as robust as they come.
