Arsene Wenger will have to up his reported £ 4 million for Fulham ‘keeper Mark Schwarzer. The Cottagers have rejected Arsenal’s advances for Schwarzer, with the Australia ‘keeper personally keen on a move to the Gunners to fulfil his Champions League ambitions. With Wenger’s return to the UK, it is not clear how long a break the Arsenal manager will have – if any – after his World Cup media duties for France television in South Africa and ahead of the Emirates Cup, which begins later this month.

Nerves
Schwarzer is currently on holiday with his family in Spain, and Fulham have denied that he has had a medical at Arsenal. The Cottagers will not want to lose the services of Schwarzer, and with the west London club currently in search of a replacement for the Liverpool departed Roy Hodgson, they will want the new incumbent to decide on player movements. Alternatively, Wenger – who revealed that nerves get the better of Manuel Almunia in the big games – could make Fulham an improved offer to secure the services of Schwarzer, an experienced ‘keeper who has been in desperate need at Arsenal since the departure of Jens Lehman.
